Earth Day 2007
Sat. April, 21
Across Michigan's Upper Peninsula
On Earth Day 2007 , The Earth Keeper Initiative will be collecting out-of-date prescription medicine that the EPA says is showing up in your drinking water because treatment plants don't remove steroids, hormones and other medicines that are dumped down the drain or flushed down a toilet.
On Earth Day 2006 we collected over 320 tons of electronic waste at dozens of sites across a 400 miles area.
On Earth Day 2005, we collected 45 tons of household poisons and vehicle batteries.
All of the e-waste was recycled.
We partner with two environmental groups, nine faith communities with 120 churches and temples, and several American Indian tribes.
The vital partners include the Superior Watershed Partnership and the Cedar Tree Institute.

Five months before the first April 22 Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times carried a lengthy article by Gladwin Hill reporting on the rising tide of environmental events: read more »
Earth Day is one of two observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. A second Earth Day, which was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970, is celebrated in many countries each year on April 22.
